MAYI
Adequate feeding of pregnant women should be a priority cause of intervention, as 1. pregnancy increases nutritional needs, 2. poor nutrition of pregnant women impairs fetal development and 3. malnutrition of pregnant women contributes to the mortality of mothers and babies.
The MAYI Project - Academy of Maternal and Child Nutrition exists to improve the nutrition and health of pregnant women, mothers and their infants up to 2 years of age. It gives access to daily nutritious meals and includes a training course "Health & Nutrition Maternal and Child" with a duration of one month.
Workshops are about sexually transmitted infections; signs of pregnancy; warning signs of pregnancy; advice for pregnancy; childbirth; personal hygiene; baby hygiene; nutrition; baby meals preparation; diseases of the baby; baby bathing and counseling to the group of teenage mothers. In partnership with the Dondo District Health Directorate, once a week a nutritionist cooks with moms nutritious recipes for pregnant women
and infants
using locally available foods. One day per week is dedicated to preparing and bathing the baby. Besides the importance of hygiene, this moment gives the baby a series of stimuli, attentions and moments of tenderness.
